SATURDAY, 31st May, 2025, KAKAKIOODUA attended the funeral service of Professor Olusuyi Odeyemi (January 19, 1946 - March 6, 2025) at the Methodist Church Nigeria, Diocese of Ijesa North, Iloko Circuit, Iloko Local Church, Iloko-Ijesa, Oriade local government, Osun State.

Prof. Olu Odeyemi was a distinguished Nigerian microbiologist, educator, and community leader whose contributions spanned academia, environmental science, and public service.
The solemn church service was filled with the deceased's associates from academic communities, friends and family. The Order of Service included prayers, scripture readings, eulogies, and music.
Born in Iloko-ljesa, Prof. Odeyemi began his education at United Methodist Primary School in ljeda-Iloko and Ijana Methodist Primary School in Imesi-lle. He completed his secondary education at Ilesa Grammar School and Abeokuta Grammar School. He earned a B.Sc. in Soil Science (Second Class Upper) from the University of Ibadan in 1970. He furthered his studies at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, obtaining a Master's degree in 1974 and a Doctorate in Agronomy and Microbiology in 1976.
His academic journey also took him to Cambridge University (UK), McGill University (Canada), and the Indian Institute of Technology (New Delhi) for advanced research.
Prof. Odeyemi served as a professor of Microbiology at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, where he held several key positions, including Head of the Department of Microbiology, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Science,: and Dean of Students' Afairs. He was also the pioneer Rector of Osun State College of Technology (OSCOTECH), Esa-Oke, served as Chairman of Osun State Water Corporation and Chairman of the Governing Polytechnic.
His expertise led him to consult for various organizations, including the Federal Capital Development Authority FCDA), UNESCO,UNEP, FAO, and Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC).
Prof. Odeyemi was a pioneer in biogas technology in Nigeria and made significant contributions to agriculture, microbiology, and environmental protection. His research led to the development of a patented PhD thesis, earning him the Most Valuable Thesis Award at Cornell University in 1976. He received several prestigious awards, including the Officer of the Federal Republic (OFR), the National Merit Award in Science and Technology, the Osun State Government Award for Excellence in Science and Technology and the Obafemi Awolowo University Great Achiever Award among others.
His passion for environmental conservation led to the establishment of the ENPOST Forest Reserve, an agroforestry and biodiversity farm in Ilesa, which attracts hundreds of visitors annually.
Beyond academia, Prof. Odeyemi was deeply involved in community development. He served as President of the ljesa Progressive Council and Chairman of the Iwude-Ijesa Planning Committee. He also contested the 2007 Osun State governorship election, demonstrating his commitment to public service.
Prof. Odeyemi is survived by his wife, Chief Mrs. Omolara Odeyeni (former Bursar Obafemi Awolowo University), children, grandchildren, and a host of relatives, friends and mentees.
His passing on March 6, 2025, at the age of 79, marked the end of a remarkable life dedicated to science, education, and community service.
His legacy continues to inspire future generations of scholars and leaders.
Following the funeral service and internment, a reception party was held at the Iloko-Ijesa Royal Park International Hotels and Resort.
