Locals Capture Rampaging Hippopotamus in Adamawa

A rampaging hippopotamus that recently terrorized communities in Adamawa State has been captured and butchered for meat by locals in Shelleng Local Government Area.

The animal, believed to have been displaced from the Kiri Dam due to severe flooding, had invaded riverbanks, farmlands, and even homes, posing a significant threat to residents.

Its presence sparked fear and panic, especially after it tragically killed a young man in Banjiram, Guyuk LGA, on July 28, 2025.

Community members say the hippo’s aggressive behavior endangered lives, livestock, and crops, prompting urgent appeals for government intervention.

“This was a serious threat to human lives and means of livelihood,” a local leader told reporters in Yola.

Locals eventually took matters into their own hands, capturing and slaughtering the animal, bringing a tense situation to an end.
