TRANSFORMATIVE GOVERNANCE FORUM MOURNS PASSING OF FORMER PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI- Nigeria Loses a Patriarch of Its Democratic Journey

The Transformative Governance Forum (TGF) joins millions of Nigerians and the global community in mourning the passing of *Former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR*, who died on today July 13, 2025, at the age of 82.

In a statement by TGF’s Chairperson & National Coordinator Aare Prof Mojeed Alabi, the organization acknowledged President Buhari’s lifetime of service:

"President Buhari’s journey mirrored Nigeria’s complex democratic evolution – from military leadership to democratically elected President. His unwavering commitment to Nigeria, whether in uniform or at the helm of civilian government, reflected a deep patriotism.

We extend our deepest condolences to the Buhari family, the people of Daura, Katsina State, and all Nigerians grieving this profound loss."

Reflecting on a Complex Legacy

TGF’s statement noted key dimensions of Buhari’s impact:

- Military Era: His role as military head of state (1983-1985) during a period of national reckoning.

- Democratic Transition: His historic 2015 election victory, signaling Nigeria’s maturing democracy.

- Anti-Corruption Stance: The symbolic weight of his "War Against Corruption" agenda.

- Security Challenges: The protracted struggles against Boko Haram and banditry during his presidency.

"History will record President Buhari as a leader who embodied both the aspirations and challenges of our nation," added Aare Alabi. "His administration reminded us that transforming governance requires not just intent, but institutional resilience and inclusive dialogue."

A Call for Reflection

While mourning, TGF urged Nigerians to reflect on Buhari’s legacy as a catalyst for democratic strengthening:   "In this moment of national reflection, we must recommit to building governance systems that transcend individuals – systems rooted in accountability, citizen welfare, and equitable development. This is the truest tribute to any leader who served Nigeria."

The Forum announced it will host a *Policy Reflection Series* in Q3 2025 to examine governance lessons from the Buhari era, inviting civil society and policy experts to contribute.
