On Tuesday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved a six-month ban on the export of raw shea nuts.
According to Vice President Kashim Shettima, the “temporary measure was subject to review” and is intended to “curb informal trade, boost processor utilisation, capture higher export value and stabilise the sector.”
Key Facts About Shea Butter
Nigeria is the largest producer of shea nuts in the world, with an “Annual Production of around 500,000 metric tons.”
The global market for shea butter is valued at “$2.5 billion to $5 billion by 2025,” and “Nigeria exports raw Shea butter, which attracts insignificant value for the product.”
“Nigerian shea nuts are highly sought after globally, particularly in cosmetics and food,” with major importers including the U.S., U.K., Germany, Japan, and parts of “Eastern Europe.”
The shea tree takes “11-15 years to bear fruit” but can be productive for over 200 years.
The major producing states in Nigeria are “Niger, Kwara, Kebbi, Nasarawa and Kogi.”
Vice President Shettima stated that the ban is “not an anti-trade policy but a pro-value addition policy,” which aims to “transform Nigeria from an exporter of raw shea nut to a global supplier of refined shea butter, oil and other derivatives.” He believes this will help “boost rural income and jobs for our people.”
