Attack on AMBO’s convoy in home territory aimed at smearing his rising popularity... Arrested suspects must be thoroughly investigated to uncover their sponsors... By Amos Ogundele

Today, the Asiwaju of Ikire Kingdom and Balogun Musulumi of the Irewole/Isokan/Aiyedaade federal constituency, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji (AMBO), took his governorship consultation message to his home base, Irewole and Isokan local governments --- two political enclaves that have consistently delivered votes for the All Progressives Congress (APC). Oyebamiji, popularly called AMBO, is running for governor of Osun in 2026. Although he is from Ikire in Irewole Local Government, Isokan was originally part of Irewole until it was carved out in 1997 during the military administration of General Sanni Abacha; the two LGs are therefore regarded as a single, indivisible political entity.

In the 2022 governorship election, the APC polled 18,198 votes to defeat the PDP’s 14,216 --- a margin of 3,982. The APC also defeated the PDP in Isokan Local Government. Since that electoral victory, violence has been unleashed against APC supporters in the area. In 2023, when President Bola Tinubu came to Osun to campaign for his presidential bid, the treasurer of APC Ward 9 in Irewole, Saheed Oyegunju, was kidnapped and later found slain along Oosa Village, via Ikire. In February, a popular APC chieftain and the reinstated chairman of Irewole Local Government, Prince Remi Abass, was bludgeoned to death inside the premises of the Irewole Local Government.

Many PDP chieftains have been apprehended in connection with these incidents and now face murder and other criminal charges at the Federal High Court in Abuja. One of the suspects is Jide Jooda, an associate of Akogun Lere Oyewumi, the senator representing the senatorial district. Lere Oyewumi and Bola Oyebamiji share the same political Ward 9 in Ikire, Irewole Local Government.

The murder trial over the killing of Remi Abass is scheduled to hold in Abuja tomorrow, Wednesday. I have laid out this background to show how violent Irewole and Isokan have been since 2022, when the APC defeated the PDP.

Today, once again, gunmen attacked Bola Oyebamiji’s convoy as it returned from Apomu --- the headquarters of Isokan --- after a successful consultation in the ancient town. During the meeting, many PDP faithful defected to the APC. The attackers fired shots at the convoy; several APC supporters were hacked with machetes and are receiving treatment in hospital. Thankfully, two of the assailants were apprehended by the Anti-Kidnapping Squad of the Nigeria Police and are now in Osogbo, reportedly “singing like canaries.”

In the usual fashion, the People’s Democratic Party has circulated a narrative designed to taint the outing and cast doubt on the rising popularity of the next governor of Osun State, God willing.

Over the last four months, the AMBO movement has taken Oyebamiji’s consultation to 20 local government areas, including Ife Area Office Modakeke, without incident. The AMBO team has consistently conducted itself with dignity and to the admiration of host communities. Isokan and Irewole were the 21st and 22nd LGs visited --- and this attack occurred.

Is it mere coincidence that a hearing on murder charges against members of the PDP is scheduled in Abuja tomorrow, and this dastardly attack was carried out today? Was it intended to divert attention and create negative press for Asiwaju Bola Oyebamiji (AMBO)? Is it logical that AMBO’s homestead would be chosen for an attack when previous visits to other LGs produced no skirmishes? The police must investigate this development thoroughly to uncover the perpetrators and their sponsors, and to bring justice to the innocent victims.
