In a surprise move, HIM Owa Adesuyi Haastrup, Ajimoko III, Paramount Ruler of Ijesaland has disbanded a task force set up by the predecessor, the late Oba Adekunle Aromolaran to drive away street traders, citing the need to support local businesses.
Owa Haastrup made the remark on Thursday at the unveiling ceremony of the Ijesaland Development Fund organized by Ijesa Communities Development Assembly ICDA at the Obokungbusi City Hall, Ilesa, Osun State.
The enforcement task team, which was composed of the High Chiefs of Ogboni, Odole, Oba Odo, Loro, Arapate, Yeyerise, Iyaloja, and Atakumosa Market Executive Committee members, was established late Owa Aromolaran II to clear the streets of traders, particularly around areas where foreign-owned shops are located.
According to the monarch, the task force's efforts had an unintended consequence: it drove customers away from the local Atakumosa market and towards the foreign-owned shops along Ereja-Adeti streets. This led to a significant decline in business for indigenous traders, who were forced to operate within the confines of the local market.
To address this issue, Owa Adesuyi Haastrup has announced plans to work with the local government to convert the road from Ereja roundabout to Isokun roundabout into a one-way street. This move is expected to create opportunities for local traders to operate on the streets and reclaim their customer base.
The monarch emphasized that it's unacceptable for foreign traders to dominate the streets while local traders are confined to the market. "They are the landlords," the monarch said. "It's an anomaly for foreign traders to force them into a local market that's no longer active."
The decision, seen as a bold move to promote local economic growth and support indigenous businesses was applauded by the generality of those who attended the event of IDF unveiling.
