In a brazen attack on Sunday morning, armed bandits stormed a newly‑opened Cherubim and Seraphim Church in the town of Ejiba, Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State. Witnesses said the gunmen opened fire during the Sunday service, sending congregants fleeing in panic.
Adegboyega Oguns, who was inside the church when the assault began, recounted that the attackers “came in suddenly and started shooting.” He told the community‑based news outlet Egbe Mekun that the pastor, popularly known as Orlando, his wife and several other worshippers were seized and taken away. “It’s a new Cherubim and Seraphim church. The pastor popularly called Orlando and wife with some others have been kidnapped,” Oguns wrote on the Egbe Mekun Parrot Facebook page, adding, “It is serious, we all ran out of church”.
The exact number of abducted victims remains unclear, as details are still sketchy. Local sources report that the raid has heightened tension across neighbouring communities, prompting many residents to stay indoors and forcing travellers to divert away from the affected road stretch.
No official statement has yet been issued by the Kogi State Police Command or the state government. Community leaders and vigilantes are reportedly combing nearby forests in an effort to locate the missing worshippers.
The incident follows a similar attack on the Isanlu Makutu–Idofin corridor in Yagba East Local Government Area just a day earlier, underscoring the growing insecurity in the western part of Kogi State.
The situation remains fluid, and authorities are urged to act swiftly to secure the release of the abducted pastor and his fellow worshippers.
