President Tinubu Commends Nigeria Armed Forces for Restoring Constitutional Order in Benin

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday praised Nigeria’s military for its swift response to a coup attempt in the Republic of Benin, saying the armed forces acted “as a defender and protector of constitutional order” at the invitation of Benin’s government.

Earlier today, a faction of Benin’s army led by Colonel Pascal Tigri seized the national television station and announced the overthrow of President Patrice Talon, suspending democratic institutions. Within hours, loyalist forces, backed by Nigerian air and ground assets, retook the TV station and dispersed the coup plotters.

President Tinubu ordered the deployment of Nigerian Air Force fighter jets to secure Benin’s airspace and provide surveillance, followed by a request for ground troops to support Benin‑led operations. The Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, confirmed that all requests were fulfilled and that Nigerian troops are now operating in Benin under Benin’s command authority.

In a Statehouse press release, Tinubu said the intervention was carried out in accordance with the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance. “Our armed forces have helped stabilise a neighbouring country and have made us proud of their commitment to sustaining our democratic values and ideals since 1999,” he added.

Special Adviser to the President, Bayo Onanuga, delivered the statement, reiterating Nigeria’s solidarity with the government and people of Benin.

The situation in Benin is reported as calm, with constitutional order restored and the coup leaders in custody. No Nigerian casualties have been reported.
