Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has claimed to have insider details of a meeting between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, held at the Presidential Villa on Wednesday.
In a statement dated January 22, 2026, Fayose alleged that Governor Makinde did not attend the meeting alone, but was accompanied by the Plateau State Governor, which he interpreted as a sign of political unease.
According to Fayose, President Tinubu reportedly told Governor Makinde that he was willing to listen to him strictly on official matters concerning Oyo State. However, the President was said to have drawn a clear line on political issues, particularly Makinde’s earlier public allegation that the President was plotting to turn Nigeria into a one-party state.
Fayose claimed the President cautioned Makinde against privately seeking political reconciliation while maintaining a different narrative in public. He further alleged that President Tinubu made it clear he was not expecting Makinde’s political support ahead of the 2027 elections and that, as President, he would continue to support his own party.
The former governor also stated that President Tinubu allegedly affirmed his confidence in the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, describing him as a loyal and consistent ally. Fayose claimed the President advised Makinde to resolve any personal or political issues with Wike independently, without drawing him into the dispute.
Fayose argued that these realities, according to him, explained Makinde’s post-meeting remarks to journalists that he remained comfortable within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), suggesting there was no political incentive for him in the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The former Ekiti State governor also raised questions about governance, calling on Governor Makinde to clarify whether the N30 billion federal intervention fund he reportedly acknowledged receiving in relation to the January 2023 Ibadan explosion had been returned or fully accounted for.
Fayose served as Governor of Ekiti State between 2003 and 2006, and again from 2014 to 2018.
