Activities marking the 70th anniversary of Methodist High School, Ilesa continued on Saturday, February 21, 2026, with a grand courtesy visit to His Imperial Majesty, Clement Adesuyi Haastrup, Ajimoko III, at the Owa Obokun Adimula Palace.
The visit formed part of Day 6 of the week-long celebration, as members of the Old Students Association converged on the palace to pay homage to the paramount ruler of Ijesaland.
Projects, Endowment Fund Highlighted
In his address before the monarch and high chiefs — including the Ogboni of Ilesa, Saka Fapohunda, High Chief Elumelu, High Chief Bajimo, Yeyerise, and Yeyesogba — the Arc. Gbenga Akintola, National President of the Old Students Association outlined several landmark projects already commissioned as part of the anniversary celebrations.
He also spoke on the proposed launch of the Methodist High School Endowment Fund, scheduled for unveiling later in the evening at the gala and award night. According to him, the fund is designed to ensure the sustainable growth and development of the institution.
Responding, High Chief Mrs. Hannah Bolanle Ojo, Yeyerise of Ilesa, expressed appreciation to the old students for their sustained commitment to the school’s progress, while High Chief Elumelu commended the association’s interventions, particularly referencing infrastructural improvements such as the school fence.
Royal Reflections and Light Moments
The entrance of Olori Beatrice Ogunlowo alongside Olori Omolara Haastrup added colour and elegance to the palace event.
In his remarks, High Chief Saka Fapohunda, Ogboni of Ilesa, described the old students as exemplary ambassadors of the school and Ijesaland, noting that their unity and developmental strides should serve as a model for other alumni bodies.
In his response, Kabiyesi thanked God for the milestone and reminisced about his youthful days, recalling fond memories of Ijesa students’ dances and inter-house sports competitions. In a humorous aside that drew laughter, the monarch mentioned how, in his younger years, he had hoped to strike acquaintances with girls from Ilesa Grammar School, Methodist High School, or St. Margaret’s Girls Secondary School.
He expressed delight that he eventually married into a family with affiliation to Methodist High School, noting that his mother-in-law is an old student of the institution.
The Owa pledged continued support for the school and jokingly promised to “sneak” into the campus one evening to personally witness the progress he had heard so much about. He challenged the alumni to do even more for their alma mater, prayed for the school’s sustained growth, and appreciated the principal, the founders, and Ijesa elites for their consistent interventions in the development of Ijesaland.
Homecoming Assembly and Cultural Display
Later in the day, activities shifted to the school hall for a vibrant Homecoming Assembly. The atmosphere was filled with nostalgia as old students shared experiences, relived cherished memories, and reconnected with classmates.
The cultural and social segment featured rich displays of Ijesa culture through traditional dances, music, and entertainment, further underscoring the pride and heritage that Methodist High School has fostered over the past seven decades.
