The week-long celebration of the 70th anniversary of Methodist High School, Ilesa came to a spiritually uplifting close on Sunday, February 22, 2026, with a solemn Thanksgiving Service held at the Methodist Cathedral Church, Otapete, Ilesa.
Old students, staff, students, and well-wishers gathered in large numbers to offer prayers of thanksgiving for seven decades of excellence, while committing the school and its alumni to greater heights in the years ahead.
“Arise, Shine: 70 Years of Covenant Light”
Delivering the sermon titled “Arise, Shine: 70 Years of Covenant Light,” the Archbishop of the Ilesa Archdiocese of the Methodist Church Nigeria, Akindeko Akinloose, described the 70th anniversary as a moment of spiritual audit.
Quoting Psalm 90:10, the Archbishop noted that the number 70 in biblical tradition signifies divine auditing — a time to reflect, assess, and renew covenant commitments.
He said the history of Methodist High School would not have been possible without the role of a purpose-driven monarch in Yorubaland, His Imperial Majesty, Clement Adesuyi Haastrup, Ajimoko III. He also traced the historical encouragement of Methodist missionary activities in Ijesaland to Ajimoko I, whose support paved the way for the establishment of Methodist institutions in the region.
Archbishop Akinloose congratulated the old students for successfully hosting the 70th anniversary celebration and commended their unwavering commitment to the growth of their alma mater.
Founded to Liberate Mind, Body and Soul
Explaining the vision behind the establishment of the school, the cleric stated that Methodist High School was founded to liberate the mind, strengthen the body through wholesome discipline and cooperation, enlighten the soul, and raise men and women of character.
He noted that the “gallery of stars” seated in the cathedral — accomplished alumni across various fields — was proof that the school’s founding vision is being fulfilled.
Referencing the teachings and evangelical philosophy of John Wesley, he emphasized that Methodism has always maintained a close connection between the church and education. According to him, the school was not established merely for Ilesa or Osun State, but to produce global citizens who would positively impact society for the Lord.
Quoting Romans 12:2, he urged students and alumni alike to remain transformed in character and purpose, stressing that they are called to be the light of the world.
Call for Integrity and Excellence
The Archbishop prayed that the school would produce “Daniels” in politics and leadership, while cautioning against moral and academic compromise. Citing Ephesians 5:3, he declared that examination malpractice and immorality should not be found among Methodist High School students and graduates.
Addressing the current principal, he charged the school leadership to uphold discipline and integrity, insisting that the institution must continue to stand for excellence and godly values.
He also reflected on past educational reforms, referencing policies introduced during the administration of former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, which he said threatened the tenets the school was known for, and praised the subsequent reversal that restored its distinct identity and glory.
Appreciations and Legacy Projects
Archbishop Akinloose appreciated the legacy of “giving forward” demonstrated by the old students, particularly commending visionary projects such as the state-of-the-art e-library and the sickbay donated to the school.
Special recognition was given to the 2026 graduating set for donating 2,000 exercise books to be distributed free to students — a gesture described as a symbol of responsible leadership and gratitude.
He further applauded the official launch of the Methodist High School Endowment Fund, describing it as a strategic step toward ensuring sustainable development for the institution.
The Thanksgiving Service ended with heartfelt prayers for continued growth, unity, and divine guidance, bringing the memorable 70th anniversary celebration to a fitting and inspiring close.
