Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy Officials Visit UniIlesa to Collaborate on Campus' Fishery and Aquaculture Facilities






Officials of the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy have visited the University of Ilesa, Ilesa, Osun State, to explore avenues for upgrading the institution's fisheries facilities.






The visit, held on July 17th, 2025 took place at the Council Chamber of the University's Senate Building where the Director of Continue Education Dr. Posi Aduroja, represented the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Taiwo Ashaolu.


In his Address, the Vice-Chancellor underscored the importance of the visit, noting that it aimed at paving the way for strategic partnerships and collaborations, driving the growth of the existing fishery facilities already in place at the University.






"I am pleased to highlight our focus on fisheries and aquaculture. Currently, our Teaching and Research Farm features seven fish ponds, providing hands-on training for Agricultural Sciences students and entrepreneurship skills for all students. We are also planning to expand our facilities by increasing the number of ponds.


"In addition, we have a large dam with diverse fish species and we have academic staff with expertise in fisheries management and aquaculture. We also engaged professional fishermen as staff members.


"We are also excited to inform you that we are involved in fish processing and packaging using smoking kiln equipment, thereby adding value to our products." The Vice Chancellor remarked 




Also, the management of the College of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Technology (CAFFTECH), Ijeda-Ijesa, Osun State, led by Otunba Emiola Ogunsanya which is collaborating with the University in its quest to the development of the best farming practice was also present to welcome the Ministry officials.


Alhaja  Hafsat Abdullah who led the 6-member official team that included Adedapo Orisaleye Leye. FDF Field officer Osun State, Faith Odianosen, Gbenga Adeniyi,  Dr. Babalola Akinwumi (Vet. Doctor) and Adebimpe Adetunji elaborated on the objective of the visit, stating that the Fisheries Department of the Ministry has the duty of seeing to sufficient, safe, and best fish farming and processing practices. 





"In the market the process is not wholesome, it is dirty. The Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy is a new ministry and the department of fishery is committed to ensure that the fishing sector is repositioned." She said 


The request of the University as enumerated by the CAFFTECH spokesperson include the assistance of the Ministry in introducing diverse fish species to the University's water reservoir which is an expansive 22.8 hectarage with the deepest level at 30ft and developing the aquaculture farm by providing essential equipment, including a mini hatchery, fish feed processing machine, canoes, Cage Culture System and other relevant tools.

During the visit, the Team inspected the Fishery unit of the University's Agriculture Teaching and Research Farm - Artificial ponds and earthen ponds at the Grow out section, the massive water reservoir, laboratory and processing and packaging section.

Notable attendees included the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Deputy Registrar, Bola Arowosegbe, Deen Faculty of Agriculture Dr. Funmilayo Oyekanmi, Head of Department of Biology, Dr. Victor Ekundare amongst others.
