The Osun State All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship Campaign Council has raised concerns over the structural condition of the newly commissioned LAMECO Flyover in Osogbo, alleging that the project has begun showing signs of distress barely weeks after it was opened to the public.
In a statement issued on Friday by the Head of Media and Publicity of the Campaign Council, Engr. Oluremi Omowaiye, the APC claimed that visible defects, including what it described as a deep pothole and other signs of structural failure, had emerged on the multi-billion-naira flyover.
According to the opposition party, the reported defects have raised questions about the quality of construction and the overall structural integrity of the project, while expressing concern over the potential safety implications for motorists and other road users.
The APC also said the development justified the decision of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Rasheed Adewolu Ladoja, an engineer by profession, not to attend the commissioning ceremony despite receiving an invitation from the Osun State Government.
The party recalled that it had previously advised the monarch against participating in the event, arguing that his professional reputation should not be used to validate a project whose quality had already attracted public scrutiny.
The Campaign Council further questioned the award of the contract to Kimzee Global Investment, alleging that the company was better known for skills acquisition and vocational training than for executing major civil engineering projects.
According to the APC, the decision to award such a strategic infrastructure project to the company raises concerns about procurement procedures, contractor selection and government commitment to public safety.
The statement also alleged that the cost of the project exceeded ₦20 billion following multiple contract variations carried out without adequate transparency.
The opposition maintained that the flyover was not among the state's most pressing infrastructure priorities, contending that traffic conditions in the area did not justify such a significant expenditure.
The APC further alleged that similar concerns had been raised about other recently commissioned projects, including the Ila township road and the dualised road project in Iwo, claiming both had begun showing signs of deterioration shortly after completion.
Consequently, the Campaign Council called on Governor Ademola Adeleke to immediately shut the LAMECO Flyover to vehicular traffic pending the outcome of an independent structural integrity assessment by qualified engineering professionals.
It also advised motorists to exercise caution and, where possible, avoid using the flyover until experts certify it safe for public use.
"The safety and welfare of the people of Osun must never be sacrificed on the altar of political propaganda or ceremonial project commissioning," the statement said.
The statement concluded with further criticism of the Adeleke administration, accusing it of mismanaging public resources and calling for greater accountability in the execution of public infrastructure projects.
