A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced three men linked to the abduction of students and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State to life imprisonment.
The convicts, Abdulrazak Umar, Yunusa Musa, and Shamsudin Sani, were sentenced on Thursday, July 23, 2026, after they were found guilty of charges related to the kidnapping.
The three defendants also admitted to being members of Darul Salam, which prosecutors identified as an affiliate of the proscribed terrorist group Ansaru.
According to the court proceedings before Justice Salem Ibrahim, Abdulrazak Umar and Shamsudin Sani pleaded guilty to providing training, giving instructions, and encouraging members of a WhatsApp group titled "The Oneness of Allah is the Foundation of Peace."
Abdulrazak Umar also admitted to illegally mining gold in streams located in the Chaza area of Suleja Local Government Area of Niger State without lawful authorization.
The Federal Government had charged the three men over their alleged roles in the kidnapping of school children and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State between January and May 2026.
Although the defendants pleaded guilty to some of the charges, they denied other allegations brought against them.
After reviewing the evidence and guilty pleas, the court sentenced the three suspects to life imprisonment. The judgment marks a major step in efforts to bring those responsible for the Oriire school abductions to justice.
