Zenith Bank has confirmed that hackers gained access to part of its customer database, exposing some personal information.
In an email sent to customers on Tuesday, the bank said the cyberattack allowed hackers to access limited customer details, including email addresses and phone numbers.
According to the bank, the attack is part of a wider global cyberattack affecting organisations in different sectors.
Zenith Bank assured customers that the breach did not affect its banking services or digital platforms. It said all banking channels remain safe and fully operational.
The bank also said it immediately activated its cybersecurity and incident response systems after discovering the attack. An investigation is ongoing to determine the full extent of the breach.
As a safety measure, Zenith Bank advised customers to be careful of phishing emails, text messages, and phone calls. The bank reminded customers never to share their passwords, PINs, One-Time Passwords (OTPs), or other security details with anyone.
The bank thanked customers for their continued trust and said it remains committed to protecting their personal information.
This is not the first cyberattack involving a Nigerian bank. In August 2024, Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) reported an attempt to compromise its website domain. At the time, the bank said customers' data was not affected.
The latest incident also comes months after the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) warned Nigerians about cybercriminals trying to steal personal and banking information.
The CBN said fraudsters were sending fake emails and online messages pretending to be from the bank. These messages often asked people to click suspicious links and contained false information about the CBN's leadership, licensing activities, and policy decisions.
The regulator urged Nigerians to ignore such messages and remain alert to online scams designed to steal personal information.
