The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has alleged a series of attacks on its members and supporters in Ede and other parts of the state, calling on the Nigeria Police Force to investigate the incidents and bring those responsible to justice.
In a statement issued on Monday by the party's Director of Media and Information, Mogaji Kola Olabisi, the APC condemned what it described as coordinated attacks allegedly carried out by political thugs linked to the Accord Party.
According to the APC, one of its members, Abideen Oyetunde, narrowly escaped death on Sunday evening after he was allegedly attacked at his residence in Sekona, Ede South Local Government Area.
The party claimed that Oyetunde sustained severe head injuries and a gunshot wound during the attack and is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital in Ede.
Speaking from his hospital bed, Oyetunde alleged that armed men invaded his residence at about 6:00 p.m. and attacked him with guns and machetes.
"The attackers came to my residence armed with dangerous weapons. One of them struck my head with a machete, and I later lost consciousness. I regained consciousness in the hospital," he was quoted as saying.
Oyetunde further alleged that he was able to identify some of the individuals involved in the attack, whom he claimed were members of the Accord Party.
In a separate incident, the APC alleged that Taofeek Akanbi, a recent defector from the Accord Party to the APC, was targeted by suspected political thugs at the Odo Eja area of Ede on Sunday night.
According to the party, the attackers stormed the Access Point Lounge in search of Akanbi and allegedly attempted to set the premises ablaze when they could not locate him. The APC said staff members at the facility were able to extinguish the fire before it caused significant damage.
The party also alleged that the convoy conveying Dr. Shekinat Oyebamiji, wife of the APC governorship candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji (AMBO), and Princess Abimbola Adereti, wife of the APC deputy governorship candidate, came under attack in Alajue, Ede, during a campaign visit to the town on Sunday.
The APC claimed that the two women escaped unharmed after their convoy was allegedly waylaid by suspected political thugs.
The opposition party described the incidents as disturbing and urged the Osun State Commissioner of Police to launch a thorough investigation into the allegations and ensure that anyone found culpable is prosecuted.
"We are appealing to the Commissioner of Police to investigate these incidents and arrest those responsible. Democracy cannot thrive in an atmosphere of violence," the statement said.
The APC further alleged that the attacks were part of a broader attempt to intimidate its members and supporters ahead of the August 15 governorship election in the state.
As of the time of filing this report, the Accord Party, Governor Ademola Adeleke, and the Osun State Police Command had not publicly responded to the allegations contained in the APC statement.
