Several persons are feared dead following the crash of a helicopter in Igbokoda, headquarters of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, on Monday, October 5, 2026.
The incident reportedly occurred in the morning in a swampy area close to a naval military base in the coastal community, throwing residents into panic as emergency and security personnel moved towards the crash site.
Preliminary reports from witnesses said the helicopter was heavily loaded and allegedly circled the area several times before crashing as rainfall intensified.
Footage reportedly emerging from the area showed what appeared to be a severely burnt wreckage in the swamp, while military equipment was said to have been scattered around the crash site.
Some of the remains reportedly seen at the scene were said to be in military uniforms, fuelling speculation that the aircraft may have been a military helicopter.
However, the identity of the aircraft, the number of people on board, the cause of the crash and the actual casualty figure had not been officially confirmed as of the time of filing this report.
Military personnel from the nearby base are reportedly involved in rescue and recovery efforts, although the swampy terrain has made access to the crash site difficult.
Igbokoda is a coastal, oil-producing community in Ondo State where helicopters are frequently used for offshore and oil-related operations. Consequently, there has also been speculation that the aircraft could have been involved in such operations. This, however, remains unconfirmed.
Residents reportedly rushed out of their homes following the crash, while security personnel moved to secure the area and coordinate rescue activities.
The incident has generated widespread concern in the community, with residents awaiting an official statement from the relevant military or aviation authorities.
The circumstances surrounding the crash remain unclear, and there is currently no official confirmation of the reported number of fatalities or whether there were survivors.
This is a developing story. KAKAKIOODUA Online will continue to monitor the situation and update readers as verified information becomes available.
