The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has congratulated Nigerians at home and in the diaspora on the occasion of the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary, urging citizens to renew their patriotism and collective commitment to building a peaceful, prosperous and united Nigeria.
The party, in a statement issued on Thursday by its Director of Media and Information, Mogaji Kola Olabisi, said the anniversary should serve as a moment for sober reflection on Nigeria’s journey since independence, as well as an opportunity to recommit to the ideals of unity, peace, justice and national development.
The Osun APC Chairman, Sooko Tajudeen Lawal, paid tribute to Nigeria’s founding fathers and other national heroes whose sacrifices and belief in the Nigerian project contributed to the country’s independence on October 1, 1960.
Lawal noted that Nigeria’s 66-year journey had witnessed remarkable achievements, difficult challenges and important lessons, stressing that the resilience, creativity and determination of Nigerians remained among the country’s greatest strengths.
He said Independence Day should go beyond celebration, urging Nigerians to remember the sacrifices of those who fought for the country’s freedom and recommit themselves to building a better nation.
The Osun APC chairman also acknowledged the contributions of successive administrations and patriotic citizens to Nigeria’s development, urging Nigerians to remain hopeful and committed to nation-building irrespective of political, ethnic, religious or regional differences.
Lawal Backs Renewed Hope Agenda
Speaking on the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Lawal expressed confidence in the objectives of the Renewed Hope Agenda, saying the administration’s reform programmes were aimed at repositioning the economy, strengthening institutions, creating opportunities and laying the foundation for sustainable development.
He urged Nigerians to support democratic institutions and remain patient and constructive as the ongoing reforms unfold, noting that meaningful national transformation requires sacrifice, perseverance and collective responsibility.
Lawal, however, stressed that the true meaning of independence must ultimately be reflected in improved living standards, quality education and healthcare, employment opportunities, security and an economic environment where Nigerians can pursue their aspirations with dignity.
He also called on leaders at all levels to remain responsive to the needs of the people, while urging citizens to complement government efforts through hard work, integrity, entrepreneurship, innovation and responsible citizenship.
‘Nigeria’s Diversity Should Be Our Strength’
The Osun APC chairman appealed to Nigerians to protect the unity of the country, stressing that Nigeria’s diversity should be regarded as a strength rather than a source of division.
He urged citizens to promote tolerance, mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and dialogue in the interest of present and future generations.
Lawal particularly charged Nigerian youths to take ownership of the country’s future, saying the Nigeria of tomorrow would be shaped by the choices, sacrifices and contributions of the younger generation.
He said the sacrifices of the nation’s founding fathers should inspire Nigerians to believe in the possibility of a greater nation, despite the challenges confronting the country.
According to him, Nigeria possesses the human and natural resources required to attain its full potential if citizens and leaders remain committed to the national project.
“After 66 years of independence, Nigeria remains a nation of immense possibilities. We must honour the sacrifices of our heroes by refusing to give up on our country.
“The journey may not always be easy, but with unity, responsible leadership, hard work and faith in Nigeria, we can build the nation of our dreams,” Lawal said.
He wished Nigerians a happy 66th Independence Anniversary, expressing hope for stronger national unity, renewed optimism, peace, prosperity and continued progress for the country.
