No fewer than five people lost their lives while several others were injured in a fatal road accident that occurred along the Benin-Ore-Shagamu Expressway in the Akinfosile area of Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State on Saturday evening.
According to the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami, the accident involved a Toyota Hiace bus with the number plate FKG 405 FX from Akure en route to Lagos.
The bus was said to have swerved off the expressway and somersaulted several times before landing in the bush.
The PPRO said, “The police have moved injured victims to the nearest hospital, while the dead have been moved to the mortuary of the same hospital.
“Investigation is ongoing to unravel the cause of the accident, while effort is on to contact the families of the passengers involved in the accident.
“She advised members of the public to reach out to their relatives who left for Lagos from Akure on Saturday to check on them to ascertain their status, and those in doubt of the whereabouts of their families should reach out to the police at Igbotako Division.”
Similarly, the state sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr Ezekiel Son’Allah, also confirmed the incident, confirming that 13 people were involved in the accident.
He stated, “The number of people involved is 13, six females, and seven males. Five of them died, while eight were injured. The accident was caused by a speed limit violation.
“The FRSC commander also advised the drivers to always be cautious of excessive spending and always.”
