Tribute to My Grandfather: Late Oba John Adetoyese Laoye, Timi of Ede... By Omooba Ayoade Adewopo

As I sit down to pen this tribute on the 50th anniversary of your passing, I feel a profound sense of gratitude and reverence for the remarkable man you were, grandpa, Late Oba John Adetoyese Laoye, Timi of Ede. Though my personal memories of you are merely echoes of stories shared and tales recounted, your legacy resonates deeply within me. It shapes my identity and informs the life choices I make today.

Akanji Erin, you were a beacon of wisdom and strength in the community of Ede and beyond. Your reign, characterized by unwavering commitment to the welfare of your people, ushered in an era of progress that continues to be felt decades after your departure. Through your transformative leadership, you championed education and cultural preservation, instilling a sense of pride in our heritage. It is this very foundation you laid that continues to inspire the younger generations, motivating us to uphold the values you embodied.

Admittedly, the memories I possess are limited, but your spirit is woven into the fabric of our family history. The countless tributes shared online tell of your dedication, foresight, and the love you had for your people. As I read through these accounts, the overarching themes become clear: you were not merely a ruler; you were a protector and a visionary who saw beyond the immediate to foster a brighter future for the community.  Your legacy is a compass guiding my aspirations, encouraging me to pursue excellence while remaining rooted in my cultural identity.

It is often said that a man’s true legacy lies in the lives he touches. While I may not have had the chance to sit by your side and learn from you directly, the influences of your decisions ripple throughout the generations. Family members and community elders speak of your kindness, integrity, and vision. You ignited a flame of ambition, encouraging many to strive for greatness. Every accolade I receive, every door that opens in my life, I ascribe, in part, to the path you paved for us. Your commitment to empowerment reverberates through our family, inspiring us to continue your mission of uplifting others.

As I reflect on my journey so far, I often find myself drawing parallels between my experiences and the lessons your life illustrated. I endeavor to ensure that your spirit lives on—not only in my own achievements but in the ways I engage with my community. Your words, echoing through time, remind me to strive for more and to extend a helping hand to those around me.

On this solemn occasion, I join my maternal family and the entire community of Ede in remembering you. We celebrate the man who dedicated his life to the upliftment of others while maintaining a commitment to our shared traditions and values. Though you are no longer physically present, your impact remains indelible, a guiding light in the journey of your descendants.

Grand Pa, as we honor you today,  I carry your legacy with me, embracing your values in my life and work. Thank you for the enduring gift of your legacy, and may your soul continue to find peace in the realm beyond.

With love and respect,
