Strength in Unity: Why APC Must Put Forward Its Best Candidate for the Gubernatorial Elections in Osun - An Appeal to the Party.... By Prince Ayoade Adewopo

As the date approaches for the upcoming gubernatorial elections in Osun State, the All Progressives Congress (APC) finds itself at a pivotal moment. With the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) setting the election timeline, the party must rally behind the strongest candidate among a list of highly qualified individuals. In a political landscape fraught with expectations, the APC has several contenders to consider: Senator Iyiola Omisore, Senator Babajide Omoworare, Senator Ajibola Bashiru, Hon. Bola Oyebamiji, H.E. Benedict Alabi, and Omooba Dotun Babayemi. Each of these candidates brings unique strengths to the table, and the leaders and elders of the party must rise to the occasion to ensure that the party's flagbearer is a candidate best suited to advance the ideals of the APC and maximize its chances for electoral success.

The Candidates

1. Senator Iyiola Omisore: With a proven track record in governance and political maneuvering, Omisore brings extensive experience and a strategic understanding of state politics. His previous tenures as Deputy Governor of Osun State, two-time Senator and National Secretary of the party give him a nuanced knowledge of the federal and local landscape and the issues that affect the populace.

2. Senator Babajide Omoworare: A former two-time Senator and a dynamic politician with a commitment to sustainable development, Omoworare has garnered respect for his deep engagement with grassroots movements. His electoral experience and strong relationship with constituents make him an appealing option for voters looking for leadership rooted in community values.

3. Senator Ajibola Bashiru: As a former Senator and the current National Secretary of the party, Bashiru’s influence gives him access to important networks and resources. His educational background and advocacy for reforms create a compelling narrative for citizens concerned about social issues.

4. Hon. Bola Oyebamiji: Former Commissioner for Finance in the State and currently the Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority, Oyebamiji is a grassroots leader with the ability to connect with voters. He is known for his integrity and public service. His commitment to enhancing the welfare of his constituents and fostering inclusive governance positions him as a strong candidate for uniting diverse stakeholders.

5. H.E. Benedict Alabi: As a former Deputy Governor of Osun State, Alabi has significant experience in administration and governance. His capacity to manage complex issues effectively stands him in good stead as a candidate who can navigate the political challenges of running a state.

6. Omooba Dotun Babayemi: An astute businessman and seasoned lawyer, Babayemi is driven by a passion for youth empowerment and innovative solutions. He represents a fresh perspective in leadership, and his appeal among younger voters can mobilize a demographic that is often underrepresented.

The Imperative of Choosing Wisely

When evaluating these candidates, it is crucial to consider electoral experience and access to bulk votes. Winning the gubernatorial election is not merely about having a good candidate; it requires someone who can galvanize widespread support. Candidates who have deep-rooted connections in the community are positioned to mobilize the electorate effectively. This experience could prove invaluable, especially in addressing the local challenges of Osun State, from economic development to education and health care.

The APC needs to carefully consider its choice of candidate for the upcoming general elections. It is crucial to put forward an individual with the wherewithal to effectively challenge and defeat the incumbent governor. This is not a time for experimentation; the party requires a candidate who is a bulldozer in the political arena—someone with a strong presence and an ability to connect with the electorate.

The ideal candidate must be a people's person, a popular name and face within the community, and an identifiable figure in society. This is someone whose name can attract voters and draw them to the polls, ensuring robust turnout for the APC.

The next election is not for the faint-hearted; it demands a candidate with courage, resilience, and a proven track record of engaging with the public. The APC must rally behind a leader who embodies these qualities to secure a decisive victory.

Aligning with the Federal Government

For Osun State, aligning with the government at the center under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's “Renewed Hope Agenda” is critical. A successful gubernatorial campaign can help consolidate the APC's position in the region, thus facilitating better collaboration between the state and federal governments. This alignment can attract investments, improve infrastructure, and boost socio-economic development in Osun. With the right leadership, the state can emerge as a model for governance that aligns with national objectives.

The Need for Unity and Vision

As the APC gears up for the gubernatorial elections, it stands at a crossroads. The leaders and elders of the party must prioritize unity and vision, transcending sentiments and zoning considerations, to select a candidate who can lead the party to victory. It is essential for the party's leadership to avoid a contentious primary that could fragment the party into factions just as it faces an all-important general election against an incumbent. The stakes are high; not only is the future of Osun at risk, but so too is the success of the APC’s broader strategy under President Tinubu’s agenda.

To that end, the party needs all hands on deck. It should do its utmost to ensure that no stone is left unturned in achieving harmony among all members. Unity will be the backbone of its campaign and is fundamental in presenting a solid front against opponents. Aligning all factions within the party will enhance its credibility and demonstrate the APC's readiness to lead.

The choice of a candidate will have a lasting impact not just on the state's governance and development but also on the APC's strength as a national party. The time to act is now, and Osun State's APC deserves a candidate who can rise to the challenge and take it to the next level.

The ultimate factor, that of the ability to match the incumbent's machinery, which obviously the APC candidate must have the ability not only to weather the rigorous internal process and emerge as the party’s flag bearer but also one who is more than capable of confronting and upstaging the existing incumbency.

The clock is ticking, and the APC must make this crucial decision wisely.
