Billionaire businessman Femi Otedola has revealed that he neither completed high school nor attended university, saying his rise in business was shaped by lessons learned outside the classroom.

In his newly released memoir, Making It Big, the 62-year-old chairman of Geregu Power Plc disclosed that he struggled academically from childhood and eventually abandoned formal education during his A Levels to work in his father’s printing business.

“I never returned for my Upper Sixth. All I wanted was to get involved in business,” Otedola writes. Despite his mother’s protests, he joined his father’s Impact Press in Lagos, where he quickly rose to managing director at 25.

He later struck out on his own, founding Centre Force Ltd. in 1994 with ₦10 million. That venture became the springboard for a vast business empire spanning oil and gas, shipping, real estate, finance and power.

Today, Otedola chairs FirstHoldco Plc and Geregu Power, and is regarded as one of Africa’s most influential business figures.

Reflecting on his unconventional path, Otedola insists his “true classroom” was the business floor. “My lessons came from watching my father, trusting my instincts, and learning from both failures and triumphs,” he writes.

His story, once marked by poor academic performance, has now been published as a testament to resilience, discipline and persistence in the face of setbacks.
