FEDERAL INTERVENTION IN ROAD TRANSPORT INFRASTRUCTURE: FEC approves ₦142bn for construction of modern bus terminals across six zones

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the construction of modern bus terminals in Nigeria’s six geo-political zones at a total cost of ₦142.03 billion.

Minister of Transportation, Senator Sa’idu Ahmed Alkali, announced the decision while briefing State House correspondents after Wednesday’s FEC meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu.

The contract was awarded to Messrs Planet Projects Limited, with the terminals to be located in Abeokuta (South-West), Gombe (North-East), Kano (North-West), Lokoja (North-Central), Onitsha (South-East), and Ewu in Edo State (South-South).

Alkali described the initiative as the first direct federal intervention in road transport infrastructure outside of road construction. He said the project aims to provide purpose-built terminals for millions of road users while addressing rising insecurity and traffic hazards on highways.

“Despite the importance of road transportation in Nigeria, there are no dedicated bus terminals serving the needs of commuters,” the minister said. “This gap has contributed to crime, road accidents, and the unchecked movement of arms across the country.”

According to him, the project was conceived by the Ministry of Transportation to improve passenger safety, enhance travel comfort, and stimulate economic growth. The locations were selected based on economic viability and strategic connectivity.

Alkali added that the proposal received presidential approval after a thorough assessment of its impact on national transportation and security.
