The United States has approved a potential sale of ammunition, precision bombs, and rockets to Nigeria, valued at an estimated $346 million.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) said Nigeria requested to purchase 1,002 MK-82 general-purpose 500lb bombs, 1,002 MXU-650 Air Foil Groups, 5,000 Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System II high-explosive warheads, MK66-4 rocket motors, and other equipment.
The package also includes FMU-139 joint programmable fuzes, bomb components, impulse cartridges, high-explosive and practice rockets, integration support and test equipment, as well as US government and contractor technical, engineering, and logistics assistance.
The DSCA listed Lockheed Martin, RTX Missiles and Defence, and BAE Systems as contractors for the deal. The companies are among the world’s leading defence manufacturers, producing advanced aircraft, missile systems, radars, naval ships, and defence electronics.
According to the DSCA, the proposed sale will strengthen Nigeria’s ability to address current and future security threats, including operations against terrorist groups and countering illicit trafficking in Nigeria and the Gulf of Guinea.
“This proposed sale will support the foreign policy goals and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a strategic partner in Sub-Saharan Africa,” the agency stated.
The DSCA said the sale would not alter the military balance in the region and expressed confidence that Nigeria would be able to integrate the munitions into its armed forces without difficulty.
The agency noted that the total cost may be lower depending on final requirements, budget approvals, and the conclusion of formal sale agreements. In 2022, the US approved a separate $997 million military equipment sale to Nigeria, which included attack helicopters, advanced precision weapons, and night vision systems.
