The Yoruba Mandate Group (YMG) has described the former governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, as a traitor who must be rejected by the entire Yoruba people.
The convener of the group, Akogun Banji Ojo, emphasized that Aregbesola, is attempting to deprive southerners of the chance to retain the presidency for a second term.
Speaking on why Yoruba people must reject the former Osun State governor and Minister for Interior, Akogun Banji Ojo stressed that the northern part of Nigeria has ruled for eight years, and it is the constitutional right of the South to also complete its eight years.
The Yoruba Mandate Group Convener maintained that Aregbesola cannot be an obstacle to achieving this goal, as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is making efforts to reshape Nigeria’s future for the better.
The group therefore call for maximum support for President Tinubu for 2027 general election from all the six geopolitical zones.
While acknowledging that Aregbesola has the constitutional right to support anyone, Akogun Banji Ojo reminded him that it is wrong to “bite the finger that once fed him”.
The group likened the former Minister of Interior’s behavior to that of Judas, accusing him of trading his former boss to the enemy.
According to Akogun Banji Ojo, Aregbesola’s decision to align with the likes of Atiku Abubakar, Nasir El-Rufai, Peter Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi amounts to betrayal not only of the Yoruba people, but also of the very political platform that nurtured him.
He recalled that Aregbesola walked in Tinubu’s shadow, rose to power through Tinubu’s influence, and benefited immensely from the political empire that Tinubu labored to build.
Akogun Banji Ojo said, “It was Tinubu who gave Aregbesola his first major break by appointing him as a powerful commissioner in his Lagos State administration. Tinubu also handed him the reins in Osun State and stood firmly by him during the turbulent legal battle that eventually secured him two terms as governor.
“That political lifeline was not merely a favor but a public endorsement that gave Aregbesola credibility and recognition in Nigerian politics.
“But today, as Tinubu settles into his role as President and begins charting a new course for Nigeria, Aregbesola appears absent from the train of national progress and seems to be actively laying tracks in the opposite direction”.
The Yoruba Mandate Group stressed that Aregbesola’s actions go beyond a personal disagreement or political recalibration. They amount to outright betrayal not just of Tinubu, but of the Yoruba political consciousness that has always sought unity in the face of external opposition.
