The National Youth Service Corps has condemned the assault on one of its members, Edema Elohor Jennifer (AN/24C/0626), in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The scheme, in a statement issued on Tuesday, and signed by the management described the incident as unacceptable and reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare and security of corps members nationwide.
“Management wishes to restate its strong commitment to the welfare and security of Corps Members nationwide and would not condone any individual or group undermining their safety for whatsoever reason,” the statement read.
It expressed dismay over the assault, stressing that justice must be served, and urged host communities and security agencies to collaborate in ensuring a safe environment for corps members.
“Members of the public are enjoined to provide adequate security for Corps Members in their places of primary assignment and host communities,” it added.
According to the NYSC, preliminary findings revealed that operatives of the Anambra State Vigilante Group forcefully entered a Corps Lodge in Oba, alleging the premises were being used for unlawful activities, a claim it noted remained unsubstantiated.
“During the incident, the operatives ordered all occupants to submit to a search, and in the process, physically assaulted Corps Member Jennifer, who was only on a visit to the lodge.
“The matter has since been formally reported to the police, and investigations are currently ongoing to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book,” the statement added.
The management restated its position that it would not tolerate any act of intimidation, harassment or abuse against corps members.
It also appealed to host communities and the public to safeguard corps members, particularly at their places of primary assignment and residences, in order to foster a secure and conducive environment for national service.
