A lifeless body of one Tope Olajide, a resident of Otan Ile, an agrarian community in Osun State, had been reportedly found hanging in his house.
Multiple sources in the Otan Ile community that preferred anonymity for security reasons claimed Olajide’s body was found hanging in his room on Thursday.
It was further learnt that immediately the lifeless body of the deceased was discovered, security personnel were contacted and people were prevented from entering the room.
One of the residents, during a chat with PUNCH Online, said, “Officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps were the first to arrive at the scene of the incident. They interacted with the people they met in the house regarding the incident.
“The body was still hanging when they arrived, but people were scared to enter the room where the body was because of fear. The NSCDC operatives who came interviewed the wife of the deceased. Police also sent operatives, and the body was later brought down. The deceased was an auto mechanic. The incident led to serious panic in the community.”
Speaking with our correspondent on Friday, the Public Relations Officer of NSCDC, Osun Command, Kehinde Adeleke, confirmed the incident.
“On Thursday at around 9:27 am, information reached our office in Ilare Division that one Olajide Tope, popularly known as MECO, living in Otan-Ile, committed suicide.
“Information gathered from people living close to the deceased indicates that he had a misunderstanding with his wife on Wednesday night. People insinuated suicide; should that be taken to be true, what led to it is still hidden,” Adeleke said.
In the Command’s admonition for the residents, Adeleke said the Osun NSCDC State Commandant, Igbalawole Sotiyo, urged individuals facing emotional trauma to reach out to the Peace and Conflict Resolution Unit of the Corps for assistance.
She added, “The unit has successfully mediated and resolved numerous cases, offering support and guidance to those in distress.
“No one should ever feel compelled to take his or her own life; every life is valuable and irreplaceable.”
