A controversy has erupted over the installation of a new Odole of Ilesa, with the Odole of Ilesa Chieftaincy Family denying the installation of Makanjuola Afolabi as the Odole of Ilesa, declaring it unlawful and null and void.
In a statement, the family affirmed that Royal High Chief Adebola Oyeleye Orolugbabe, Oyegbulu 1, remains the recognised Odole of Ilesa, citing the Chiefs Law, which stipulates that only the State Government, through the Governor, has the authority to approve the selection and removal of an Odole.
However, the Palace of Owa Obokun of Ijesaland has issued a counter-statement, claiming that the selection process for the Odole chieftaincy stool is incomplete and that Adebola Orolugbabe's claim to the title is "unrealistic and delusional".
The Palace statement, signed by Personal Secretary John Abe, alleges that the late Oba Dr. Gabriel Adekunle Aromolaran did not notify the State Government of Orolugbabe's selection before his demise, rendering his claim to the title invalid.
The dispute has led to calls for the public to maintain peace and refrain from recognising Adebola Orolugbabe as the Odole of Ilesa, with the Palace advising members of the public not to accord him any recognition.
