UPDATE ON NIGER STATE SCHOOL ABDUCTION: 50 CHILDREN ESCAPE CAPTIVITY

Fifty schoolchildren have escaped from their abductors and reunited with their families, bringing hope to the families of the 303 students and teachers still held captive. The children, aged between 10 and 18, escaped individually between Friday and Saturday from an unknown location.

The Most Rev. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Niger state and proprietor of the school, confirmed the development, stating that 253 schoolchildren and 12 teachers are still being held by the kidnappers.

The abduction occurred on Friday when gunmen attacked St. Mary’s School, a Catholic institution in Niger state’s remote Papiri community. No group has claimed responsibility, and authorities have deployed tactical squads and local hunters to rescue the remaining captives.

The circumstances of the escapees' freedom are unclear, and investigations are ongoing.
