DSS Detains Osun Islamic Cleric After Pro‑Palestine March Goes Viral

Operatives of Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) have taken into custody Sheikh Daood Imran Molaasan, the leader of the Ta’awunu Muslimeen group, following a pro‑Palestine demonstration that spread widely on social media.

The protest, held in the town of Iwo, was captured on video showing Molaasan and his followers marching with Palestinian flags, chanting slogans calling for the “liberation of Palestine” from what they described as Israeli occupation. The clip quickly went viral, prompting a mixed reaction online: many users expressed solidarity with the Palestinian cause, while others raised alarm over the group’s methods and the presence of children chanting intense religious slogans.

Ta’awunu Muslimeen, which describes itself as an Islamic movement focused on religious teachings and global Muslim issues, has staged similar demonstrations before, including a rally in 2018. During the recent march, participants pledged allegiance to the Qur’an and Sunnah, and some observers criticized coordinated arm gestures that were likened to Nazi‑style salutes.

The DSS has not yet released an official statement confirming the arrest or detailing any charges against Sheikh Molaasan. Civil‑society groups have called for an independent inquiry, urging transparency about the legal basis for the detention and emphasizing the need to distinguish between legitimate security concerns and protected expression.

Human‑rights lawyers note that if formal charges are filed, due process must be followed, including respect for statutory detention limits and the right to legal representation.

The incident has reignited a national debate over the balance between national security and the right to peaceful protest, especially amid Nigeria’s ongoing challenges with religious‑based extremism.

The DSS is yet to comment further; the investigation remains ongoing.
