Six days remain until the grand celebration of Iwude Ijesa, the ancient city whose population is swelling as tourists and Ijesa citizens pour in to witness the historic event.
Today, at the Methodist Church Nigeria cathedral, Otapete in Ilesa will play host to traditional rulers, members of the Iwude Ijesa planning committee and other sons and daughters of the land for the annual Iwude Ijesa Thanksgiving Service. The royal host for the occasion is Owa Clement Adesuyi Haastrup Ajimoko III, the Paramount Ruler of Ijesaland.
The planning committee and the logistics subcommittee, to be led by Chairman Chief Afolabi Igbaroola and Vice Chairman Alagba Wale Idowu, at the Sunday Yoruba Service of the church to signify the commencement of the scheduled activities marking the commencement of the 2025 edition of the festival that aims to foster unity among the Ijesa people and showcase the region’s cultural heritage.
Earlier on Friday, a special Jumat service was held at Erinmo‑Ijesa, Oriade local government Central Mosque.
The scheduled activities will also feature Ayo game on Thursday 18th December, Commissioning of OWA Ajimoko Multipurpose Building, Cultural displays and Iwude Beauty Peagants competition on Friday 19th December, Royal Parade on Saturday December 20, and the Ijesa Unity Carnival on Sunday December 21 at the Ilesa Grammar School Sport Field.
The Owa expressed his full support for the festival, describing it as a vital instrument for cultural preservation and unity. He also called on affluent sons and daughters of Ijesa to invest in industries rather than luxury, and to support development projects.
The influx of visitors has boosted local businesses, with hotels, restaurants and transport operators reporting increased patronage. The festival is expected to draw thousands of visitors from across Nigeria and the diaspora, further cementing Iwude Ijesa’s place on the national cultural calendar.
