Adewole Hails Bisi Akande as Pillar of Nigeria’s Democratic Journey at 87

A former Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, has described former Osun State Governor, Chief Bisi Akande, as one of the enduring pillars of Nigeria’s democratic journey.

Adewole made the remark in a statement issued on Sunday in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, to mark Akande’s 87th birthday.

He described the elder statesman as “an elder whose life story is woven into the fabric of our nation’s political history, particularly in the South-West,” noting that Akande’s contributions have left a lasting imprint on Nigeria’s democratic development.

According to Adewole, Akande distinguished himself during his tenure as governor through prudent management of resources, a simple lifestyle and a rare sense of accountability in governance.

“As a former governor, he proved that leadership is not about personal luxury but about sacrifice, service and legacy,” Adewole said.

Adewole, who also serves as the Secretary of the Akande Foundation, described Akande at 87 as “a bridge between generations,” noting that he has played a central role in the evolution of progressive politics in Nigeria, from the Action Group and the Unity Party of Nigeria to the Alliance for Democracy and, ultimately, the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He added that Akande’s leadership style—frank, principled and consistent—has earned him widespread respect across political, ethnic and religious divides.

“Chief Akande is known for speaking the truth as he sees it, without malice, fear or favour. In an age of political convenience, he has remained a symbol of conviction,” Adewole stated.

The former minister also described Akande as a champion of progressive ideals and federalism, as well as a custodian of the values of honesty, modesty and hard work.

Adewole prayed for continued good health and strength for the elder statesman, expressing hope that Akande’s remaining years would be filled with joy and that his ideals would continue to inspire present and future generations.

Chief Bisi Akande served as governor of Osun State between 1999 and 2003 under the Alliance for Democracy. He later became the pioneer National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress following the merger of the Action Congress of Nigeria, the All Nigeria Peoples Party, the Congress for Progressive Change and other political parties in February 2013.
