The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has announced the sudden passing of an 18-year-old medical student, Timilehin Adetoye Toromade.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Abiodun Olarewaju, the Part Three medical student was reported to have died in his sleep in the early hours of the day. A roommate disclosed that the deceased was still active around 2:00 a.m., having opened the door for a fellow student shortly before the incident.
Reacting to the development, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, expressed deep sorrow over the loss on behalf of the entire university community. He described Timilehin’s death as a heartbreaking tragedy, noting that the young student was full of promise and committed to the noble profession of healing.
Professor Bamire added that the loss has created a painful void within the College of Health Sciences, where the deceased was known as a dedicated and focused student.
The university management disclosed that it is collaborating with relevant authorities to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the death through standard medical procedures. OAU also stated that counseling and emotional support are being provided for students and staff affected by the incident.
The management called for calm and unity within the university community during this period of mourning, while offering prayers for the repose of the soul of the deceased and comfort for his bereaved family.
