Osun APC Demands Police Probe Into Ataoja’s Alleged Assassination Attempt

The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on the state Police Command to launch a comprehensive investigation into an alleged assassination attempt on the Ataoja of Osogbo, His Royal Majesty, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji, Larooye II.

The opposition party made the call in a statement issued on Sunday by its Director of Media and Information, Mogaji Kola Olabisi, following remarks reportedly made by the monarch during an event held in Osogbo on Saturday.

According to reports, Oba Oyetunji disclosed at the adoption ceremony of Governor Ademola Adeleke for a second term by spare parts traders in the Ajegunle area of Osogbo that he recently escaped an assassination attempt after unidentified hoodlums allegedly opened fire on his palace.

Reacting to the allegation, the APC described the claim as serious and urged security agencies to investigate the matter thoroughly to establish the facts and bring any perpetrators to justice.

“The allegation of an assassination attempt on a foremost traditional ruler in Osun State is a grievous one that should not be ignored. It deserves urgent and detailed investigation by the police,” the party stated.

The APC questioned whether the incident had been formally reported to the police and, if so, why there had been no official statement from law enforcement authorities regarding such a significant security breach.

The party also raised concerns about reports that some residents of the Ataoja’s palace were injured during the alleged attack. It called for details of the victims and the nature of their injuries to be made available to investigators.

According to the APC, medical records and information relating to the treatment of any gunshot victims could assist security agencies in verifying the allegations and strengthening the investigation.

The party further appealed to members of the public with useful information about the alleged incident to cooperate with the police by providing relevant details.

It also expressed surprise that an incident of such magnitude had not attracted widespread coverage from either traditional or social media platforms and urged media organisations operating in the state to investigate the matter independently.

The APC maintained that a transparent investigation would help clarify the circumstances surrounding the allegation and reassure residents about the security situation in the state.

The party also used the opportunity to distance itself from any form of political violence ahead of the August 15, 2026 governorship election in Osun State.

According to the statement, the APC’s governorship candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, popularly known as AMBO, remains confident of victory through popular support and democratic means.

“The investigation will further prove that our party does not subscribe to violence and that our candidate does not require intimidation, violence, or propaganda to win the forthcoming governorship election,” the statement added.

The APC concluded by urging the police to expedite action on the matter in the interest of justice, public confidence, and the preservation of peace in Osun State.
