The Osun State Police Command has arrested 24 people suspected of being cultists and political thugs as part of efforts to improve security before the August 15 governorship election.
The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, announced the arrests during a press briefing on Monday. He said the police stepped up operations after recent cult-related killings and violent attacks in different parts of the state.
According to the police commissioner, some of the incidents have been given political meaning, but the command is focused on finding those responsible and keeping the state peaceful.
"The command is aware of the recent cult-related killings and acts of thuggery threatening the peace of the state. We have arrested several suspects linked to these crimes and will continue to protect the lives and property of residents," he said.
The police also released the names of the 24 suspects arrested during the operation.
Gotan warned cultists, political thugs, and other criminals to stop causing trouble or face the full force of the law. He said the command is determined to remove criminal elements from the state before, during, and after the election.
He also assured residents that the police would remain professional, neutral, and fair while carrying out their duties. He called on members of the public to continue supporting the police with useful information to help keep Osun State safe.
