Oyo Monarch Reportedly Arrested Over Investigation Into Oriire School Abduction

A traditional ruler in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, Oba Tajudeen Abioye, the Eleshi Ele of Esiele, has reportedly been arrested by security operatives in connection with ongoing investigations into the recent abduction of pupils, students, and teachers in the area.

Sources familiar with the investigation disclosed that the monarch was taken into custody following allegations linking him to individuals suspected of having played roles in the school abduction that affected communities around Ahoro-Esiele, Yawota, and other neighbouring settlements.

The reported arrest comes weeks after armed kidnappers invaded schools in Oriire Local Government Area, abducting dozens of schoolchildren and education workers in an incident that triggered widespread concern across Oyo State and beyond.

According to sources, investigators are exploring multiple leads, including allegations of local collaboration, intelligence leaks, and logistical support that may have facilitated the attack before and after it occurred. The monarch's reported arrest is said to be part of broader efforts aimed at uncovering the network behind the abduction and establishing the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

Further findings suggest that security agencies are examining communications, movements, and possible links between suspects already in custody and other individuals considered relevant to the ongoing probe.

The development has generated mixed reactions among residents of Oriire Local Government Area, many of whom are still grappling with the impact of the abduction. While some community members expressed shock at the reports, others noted that the monarch had publicly condemned the attack and previously called for urgent efforts to secure the release of the victims.

Community leaders and stakeholders have urged security agencies to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation, stressing the importance of due process and cautioning against premature conclusions until all facts are established.

The school abduction remains one of the most disturbing security incidents recorded in Oyo State this year. The attack drew widespread condemnation from parents, education stakeholders, civil society organisations, and political leaders, while also raising fresh concerns about the safety of schools and rural communities.

Sources further revealed that several individuals believed to be connected to the incident have already been apprehended, while efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest other suspected collaborators.

As of the time of filing this report, security authorities had not issued an official statement confirming the specific allegations against Oba Tajudeen Abioye. Attempts to obtain comments from the palace and individuals close to the monarch were unsuccessful.

Investigations into the abduction and the alleged involvement of other suspects are ongoing.
