A major political realignment appears to be unfolding in Osun State ahead of the 2026 governorship election, as prominent members of the Accord Party, including serving aides to Governor Ademola Adeleke, have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The defectors announced their decision during a press briefing held at the Ileri-Oluwa Campaign Office, where they attributed their departure from the Accord Party to what they described as growing internal crises, impunity, and a lack of purposeful leadership within the ruling party.
Among those who formally joined the APC are former Accord Party House of Representatives aspirant for Ife Federal Constituency, Dr. Leye Olagbaju; Senior Special Assistant to Governor Ademola Adeleke on Governor's Office, Hon. Azeez Kazeem Olatunde; Accord Party Youth Leader in Ife Central Local Government, Hon. Gbenga Ogunmuyide Asamo; former Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Market Affairs, Hon. Moyoade Lukman Ayotade; and Hon. Ojuolape Olalekan Olagbaju.
Speaking on behalf of the group, the defectors said their decision was informed by the prolonged political challenges within the Accord Party, which they claimed had become disconnected from its founding ideals.
They alleged that the party had become a "political orphan" due to what they described as a lack of direction, effective leadership, and respect for members.
The former Accord chieftains further stated that they were attracted to the APC by its internal cohesion, leadership structure, and commitment to inclusiveness and human dignity.
Declaring their support for the APC governorship candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, popularly known as AMBO, the defectors described him as the most competent candidate to lead Osun State.
They pledged to work alongside APC leaders and members across the state to secure electoral victories for Oyebamiji, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and other candidates of the party in future elections.
Receiving the defectors on behalf of the APC, the Director-General of the APC Governorship Campaign Council, Hon. Oluwole Oke, welcomed them into the party and assured them of equal opportunities and fair treatment.
Oke stated that the APC remains open to all individuals willing to join its progressive movement and contribute to its vision for Osun State.
The latest wave of defections is expected to intensify political activities in the state as parties continue to strategize ahead of the 2026 governorship contest.
