The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), through its Media Cluster, has raised the alarm over alleged violent attacks, killings and assault on security personnel in Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area of the state.
The party, in an emergency press address issued on Monday, August 24, 2026, alleged that armed thugs linked to the Accord Party were responsible for the violence, which it said had created fear among residents and disrupted economic activities in the town.
According to the APC Media Cluster, the incident occurred earlier on Monday around Naira and Kobo Junction in Ikire, where it alleged that armed hoodlums attacked a local transport hub.
The party claimed that innocent commuters, a commercial driver and other travellers were killed during the incident.
The APC described the development as more than a street fight, alleging that it was a coordinated attack on public safety and constituted a serious challenge to law and order.
The party further alleged that the Divisional Police Officer of the Irewole Police Division was attacked after responding to a distress call concerning the alleged abduction and torture of an APC member at a motor park.
The APC Media Cluster claimed that some police officers were assaulted during the incident and that service rifles were allegedly taken from them.
It identified individuals it described as field commanders of the alleged operation as Soskid, T. Banson and Ayewo, whom it described as a wanted suspect.
The party also linked the current development to the unresolved killing of the former Chairman of Irewole Local Government, Hon. Remi Abass, who, according to the statement, was killed on February 17 last year.
The APC alleged that no one had been brought to justice over the incident and claimed that Accord Party chieftain, Jide Jooda, had previously been identified as a prime suspect. The party said the failure to prosecute previous political killings had contributed to what it described as a culture of impunity.
The APC Media Cluster further alleged that the latest violence was coordinated and sponsored by Senator Lere Oyewumi, whom it described as the Deputy Senate Minority Leader and Director-General of Governor Ademola Adeleke's campaign.
The party linked the allegation to what it described as previous public statements by the senator which, according to the APC, encouraged aggression against its members.
The APC also expressed concern over the timing of the incident, noting that it occurred shortly after meetings involving its governorship candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, and Governor Ademola Adeleke with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The party said President Tinubu had called for peace, stability and respect for the rule of law in Osun State.
While commending Oyebamiji for what it described as his continued call for peace and constitutional engagement, the APC alleged that Governor Adeleke and his political allies had instead allowed violence to escalate.
The party particularly accused the state government of failing to prevent alleged attacks on local government secretariats where reinstated APC chairmen were carrying out their statutory duties.
The APC Media Cluster also criticised Governor Adeleke, describing him as the Chief Security Officer of the state and alleging that his administration had failed to prevent politically motivated violence.
The party called on the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 11, the Osun State Commissioner of Police and other security authorities to take immediate action.
It demanded the deployment of additional security personnel to Ikire, protection of local government secretariats and recovery of any police weapons allegedly taken during the incident.
The APC also called for the arrest and prosecution of those it accused of involvement in the violence, including Soskid, T. Banson, Ayewo and Jide Jooda, as well as anyone found to have sponsored or supported the alleged attacks.
The party said political affiliation should not shield anyone from investigation or prosecution where evidence of criminal conduct exists.
Meanwhile, the APC Media Cluster commiserated with the families of those reportedly killed during the violence and appealed to residents and party supporters to remain calm.
The party urged its members not to embark on reprisal attacks, stressing that security agencies should be allowed to investigate the incident and restore order.
“Osun State belongs to all its citizens, and street intimidation will never replace the rule of law,” the APC said.
The party called on residents to remain peaceful while urging the security agencies to act swiftly to prevent further loss of lives and escalation of violence in Ikire and other parts of the state.
