Osun APC Commends Police Over Arrest of Alleged Political Thug, Calls for Thorough Investigation Ahead of Governorship Election

‎The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has commended the Osun State Police Command for the arrest of an alleged political thug said to be linked to the Accord Party, describing the development as a significant step toward ensuring a peaceful and credible governorship election in the state.

‎In a press statement issued on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, and signed by the party's Director of Media and Information, Mogaji Kola Olabisi, the APC praised the police for what it described as professionalism and readiness to curb election-related violence.

‎According to the statement, the suspect, identified as Saheed Oyeyemi Adedeji, was arrested in Osogbo following an operation during which he was allegedly found in possession of military uniforms, pump-action rifles and ammunition.

The APC further claimed that the suspect allegedly engaged security operatives in a gun battle before he was eventually subdued and arrested. The party also alleged that three police officers sustained gunshot injuries during the operation and are currently receiving medical treatment.

‎The statement referenced confirmation by the Osun State Police Command of the arrest of the suspect, whom the APC described as an appointee of Governor Ademola Adeleke and a chieftain of the Accord Party. The party alleged that the suspect serves as a Personal Assistant to Nurudeen Wakili, the recently removed Chairman of the Osun Park Management System.

‎According to the APC, the suspect allegedly made statements to investigators linking weapons recovered during the operation to another individual identified as Nurudeen Alowonle. The party also claimed that ongoing police investigations could lead to the arrest of other individuals allegedly connected with the case.

‎The APC further alleged that some officials within the state government had been making efforts behind the scenes to secure the suspect's release. However, the party did not provide evidence to support the allegation.

‎Calling for transparency, the APC urged the police to conduct a comprehensive investigation and prosecute anyone found culpable, irrespective of political affiliation or social status.

‎"We are unequivocally demanding a thorough investigation and prosecution of the arrested suspect, as well as the invitation, investigation and prosecution of all those mentioned during the course of the investigation, regardless of their socio-political standing," the statement said.

‎The party also renewed its criticism of Governor Ademola Adeleke, alleging that political actors linked to his administration were being shielded from prosecution. It further argued that the Commissioner of Police had demonstrated professionalism by refusing to compromise law enforcement despite alleged political pressure.

‎The APC concluded by urging security agencies to sustain their efforts to rid the state of criminal elements and ensure that the forthcoming Osun State governorship election is conducted in a peaceful, secure and violence-free atmosphere.

‎As of the time of filing this report, the Osun State Government and the Accord Party had not publicly responded to the APC's allegations.
