The Osun State All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship Campaign Council has dismissed allegations by the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun, accusing APC members of attacking the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Odo-Otin Local Government Area and carting away Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
In a statement issued on Monday by the Head of the Media and Publicity Committee of the APC Governorship Campaign Council, Engr. Oluremi Omowaiye, the party described the allegation as false, misleading and unsubstantiated.
The APC alleged that the Speaker's comments were driven by what it described as "election fever" ahead of the August 15 governorship election, insisting that the accusation was a deliberate attempt to divert attention from what it called the growing rejection of Governor Ademola Adeleke's administration across Osun State.
According to the campaign council, the increasing support for the APC governorship candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji (AMBO), and his Seven-Point Prosperity Agenda has unsettled the ruling party.
The APC further alleged that political thugs linked to the Speaker were responsible for the attack on the INEC office in Odo-Otin, claiming that eyewitnesses and security sources identified those involved as individuals associated with the Speaker.
The campaign council accused the Speaker of attempting to shift blame to the opposition in order to evade scrutiny, describing his allegation against the APC as irresponsible and aimed at misleading the public.
The party called on the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), and other security agencies to conduct what it described as a thorough, professional and impartial investigation into the incident, with a view to identifying and prosecuting those responsible regardless of their political affiliation or status.
The statement also urged security agencies to investigate the Speaker, citing previous allegations of violent conduct and referencing a petition reportedly submitted by traditional rulers from his hometown accusing him of issuing threats against one of them.
The APC maintained that it remains committed to peaceful, free, fair and credible elections, stressing that it has no reason to undermine the electoral process through violence or intimidation because of what it described as its widespread acceptance among Osun voters.
The campaign council appealed to residents of the state to disregard the Speaker's allegations, remain vigilant and participate peacefully in the August 15 governorship election.
