The Osun State Police Command says it has restored normalcy in Ile-Ife following a public disturbance allegedly caused by suspected thugs at the Mayfair Garage area, while also intensifying efforts to arrest those responsible for attacking officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and stealing Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) in Odo-Otin Local Government Area.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, the Command received credible intelligence that a group of suspected thugs had assembled around Mayfair Garage in Ile-Ife, where they became unruly and disrupted public peace.
The statement said the Commissioner of Police immediately ordered the deployment of police operatives to the area to prevent the situation from escalating. Police officers reportedly used minimal and proportionate force to disperse the hoodlums and restore law and order, while prioritising the safety of residents and the protection of lives and property.
The Command confirmed that calm has since returned to the area and normal activities have resumed.
In a related incident, the police disclosed that armed thugs attacked INEC officials who were peacefully distributing Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) at Oyinlola DC Primary School, Ward 2, in Odo-Otin Local Government Area.
According to the statement, about ten armed hoodlums stormed the distribution centre, fired sporadically into the air, and fled with three packs of PVCs.
Condemning the attack, the Commissioner of Police described the incident as unacceptable and directed a full-scale investigation to identify, arrest, and prosecute all those involved.
The Command said tactical and intelligence teams have been deployed to track down the suspects and recover the stolen PVCs.
The police also urged members of the public to remain calm, law-abiding, and avoid actions capable of causing further breaches of the peace.
Residents and eyewitnesses with useful information that could aid the investigation were encouraged to report to the nearest police station or contact the Command through its emergency lines.
The Osun State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and maintaining peace and public order across the state, assuring residents of Ile-Ife, Odo-Otin, and other communities that security agencies remain vigilant ahead of the forthcoming elections.
