The Awara of Iwara Kingdom and President of the Ijesa South Traditional Council, Oba Adeola Adekinle Ajagungbade Okunola II, has warned politicians and their supporters against acts that could lead to violence and bloodshed in Ijesaland ahead of the August 15 Osun State governorship election.
The monarch, who is also Chairman of the Atakunmosa East Chieftaincy Committee Council, condemned reported cases of political violence and killings in the area.
He said no political ambition, regardless of how important a politician may consider it, is worth the life of any person in Ijesaland.
In a statement made available to journalists, Oba Ajagungbade said politics should not be treated as a do-or-die affair.
He reminded voters that they have the right to freely choose their preferred candidate or political party without threats, force or intimidation.
The monarch called on politicians across all parties to put the peace, unity, security and development of Ijesaland and Osun State first.
He also warned political leaders and their supporters against making statements that could encourage violence or the killing of political opponents.
According to him, the August 15 election should be peaceful, free and fair, allowing voters to perform their civic duties without fear.
Don’t Allow Politicians to Use You, Monarch Tells Youths
Oba Ajagungbade also appealed to youths across Ijesaland not to allow themselves to be used as tools for political violence.
He urged young people to think about their future and avoid actions that could put their lives or the future of their communities at risk.
The monarch further called on political leaders and experienced members of the various parties to show maturity before, during and after the election.
He warned that political differences should not destroy the unity, brotherhood and peaceful relationship that have existed among the people of Ijesaland.
The Awara also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure a free, fair and transparent election.
He urged traditional rulers, political leaders, security agencies, journalists, youths and other stakeholders to work together to maintain peace across Ijesaland and Osun State.
The monarch said elections would come and go, but the lives and unity of the people must always be protected.
Monarch Rejects Link Between Iwaraland and Political Violence
Oba Ajagungbade also warned politicians against linking Iwaraland with political violence.
He urged them to allow the police and other security agencies to investigate incidents of violence and identify those responsible.
The monarch also condemned the reported assault on palace staff and traditional chiefs at the palace courtyard of the Owa Obokun Adimula and Paramount Ruler of Ijesaland.
He described the incident as a serious disrespect to the traditional institution and the heritage of the people.
Oba Ajagungbade called on security agencies to arrest and prosecute those responsible for the reported assault and other political killings across Ijesaland in the months leading to the August 15 election.
He urged all political actors to put the safety of the people above political interests and ensure that the election does not become a source of bloodshed in Ijesaland.
