The Commissioner of Police for the August 15 Osun governorship election, Samuel Etaifo, said about 15,000 police officers and other security workers will be on duty during the election.
He spoke in Osogbo on Wednesday during a meeting with police officers sent to work for the election.
Etaifo said the security team will include regular police officers, special officers, dog unit officers, medical workers, and Police Mobile Force officers. He also said a Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) and an Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) will come to Osun to help supervise the election.
He said he was sent by the Inspector General of Police to lead security for the election. According to him, some officers had already been sent to the state because of recent violence.
The police commissioner told officers to behave well, obey the law, and do their work fairly. He warned that anyone who tries to stop a free and fair election will be punished, no matter who the person is.
Etaifo also said that anyone arrested for breaking election laws during the poll will be taken to Abuja for investigation.
People in Osun State will vote on August 15 to choose a governor. Fourteen candidates, including Governor Ademola Adeleke, are taking part in the election.
