The Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, has pledged to support the development and advancement of the Top Golf Club and its golf course located within the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
Olopade gave the assurance when he received the Olumobi of Imobi Ijesa Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Sir Jacob Adetayo Haastrup, and prominent members of the Board of Trustees of Top Golf Club, who paid him a courtesy visit to discuss the progress and future development of the facility.
The meeting provided an opportunity for the delegation to present its requests and engage the Sports Commission on ways to further improve the golf course and strengthen its contribution to the development of golf in Nigeria.
Oba Haastrup congratulated Olopade on his appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, recalling his previous service as Commissioner for Youth and Sports in Ogun State during the administration of former Governor Gbenga Daniel.
In his response, Olopade also highlighted the need for greater attention to the welfare and educational development of young people working as caddies in golf clubs across Nigeria.
He advised golfers and club administrators to consider setting an appropriate age limit for caddies and supporting their education, stressing the importance of ensuring that caddying does not come at the expense of formal education. He further suggested that caddying should, where appropriate, be treated as a part-time engagement.
The DG assured the delegation that he would consider the requests presented and do his best to support the development of the Top Golf course.
Oba Haastrup, who is a member of IBB Golf and Country Club, TYB Golf Club and GEJ Golf Club in Abuja, as well as Ijesa Golf and Country Club, expressed appreciation for the warm reception accorded the delegation.
As a gesture of goodwill, the monarch presented Olopade with a complete golf bag and, on behalf of the Board of Trustees of Top Golf Club, pledged to provide a professional golfer to train the Director-General and assist him in improving his golfing skills.
The engagement highlights growing efforts by stakeholders to strengthen golf infrastructure, promote responsible participation among young people and further develop the sport in Nigeria.
