“We Cannot Afford to Continue Like This”: Bishop Oluyamo’s Wife, Dr (Mrs) Margaret Oluyamo, Challenges Government on Security, Economy, Rule of Law

President of the Diocesan Women and Girls’ Organisations, Diocese of Ijesa North, Dr. (Mrs.) Margaret Olusola Oluyamo, has called on the Federal Government to urgently address Nigeria’s worsening insecurity, economic hardship, deteriorating infrastructure and disregard for the rule of law.

Oluyamo made the call while delivering her presidential address at the 2026 Annual Diocesan Women’s Conference, held at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, Ere Ijesa, on Saturday, October 17, 2026.

Speaking under the theme of urgent national concerns, she acknowledged some positive policy initiatives of the Federal Government but insisted that more decisive action was needed to address the mounting challenges confronting Nigerians.

Her address highlighted the growing concerns over kidnapping, banditry, electoral violence, business closures, brain drain and the prolonged paralysis of local government administration in Osun State.

Security Agencies Must Tackle Kidnapping, Banditry

Expressing deep concern over persistent kidnapping and banditry across the country, Oluyamo questioned the effectiveness of Nigeria’s intelligence and security architecture.

She wondered why bandit kingpins could reportedly communicate with victims’ families to negotiate ransom payments without being tracked or intercepted by security agencies.

The Diocesan Women’s President also condemned the activities of alleged occultic groups and the brazen use of firearms in public spaces, warning that the continued loss of lives demanded urgent and visible government intervention.

She cited reported incidents of violence before, during and after elections in Osun State as a troubling example, questioning the apparent inability of authorities to decisively address the menace and bring perpetrators to justice.

Economic Hardship, Bad Roads Worsen Citizens’ Plight

Oluyamo also lamented the deplorable state of Nigeria’s road networks, describing many highways as death traps that expose motorists and other road users to danger.

She noted that the harsh economic climate had placed enormous pressure on individuals, families and businesses, with several enterprises struggling to survive or shutting down completely.

She called for a review of government policies to ensure that economic reforms deliver tangible benefits to ordinary Nigerians rather than deepen their hardship.

Oluyamo Seeks Federal Intervention in Osun LG Crisis

Turning to the local government crisis in Osun State, the cleric appealed to the Federal Government to intervene urgently in the prolonged administrative impasse, which she said had left many local government workers suffering.

She stressed the need for a lasting resolution that would restore effective local government administration and ease the hardship being experienced by affected personnel.

Oluyamo further urged government authorities at all levels to respect the rule of law, follow due process and obey valid court injunctions, emphasising that adherence to judicial decisions remained essential to good governance and public confidence.

Calls for People-Centred Governance

In her concluding remarks, the Diocesan Women’s President charged the government to rise to the challenge of leadership by urgently reviewing its policies and adopting a more people-centred approach to governance.

She maintained that government interventions must translate into measurable improvements in security, economic stability, infrastructure and the general welfare of Nigerians.

Despite her concerns about the state of the nation, Oluyamo urged Christians to remain steadfast in their faith and trust in God amid the prevailing difficulties.

Reminding the congregation that Jesus Christ had promised victory over the challenges of the world rather than a life without trials, she drew encouragement from Romans 8:37, which declares that believers are “more than conquerors through Him who loved us.”

The annual conference provided a platform for women across the Diocese of Ijesa North to reflect on their achievements, renew their spiritual commitment and consider their role in responding to contemporary societal challenges.

Report compiled by the Reverend Canon Oluseyi Atanda, Diocesan Communicator, Diocese of Ijesa North.
