2023 POLLS: IJESA APC CANDIDATES SEEK ENHANCED SECURITY By ISAAC OLUSESI

Security has been described as fundamentally integral to electoral process to define the upcoming general elections in Nigeria as fair and credible that would reflect the free expression of the will of the electorate.

This was the focal point at the security consultative meeting of the Ijesa North & South All Progressives Congress (APC) election candidates held today, Saturday, ahead of the Presidential and National Assembly elections, February 25.

The meeting convener, Otunba Jumoke Ogunkeyede (JMK) had explained that the nature of public elections in a democracy makes it vulnerable to a range of security threats from structural and circumstantial sources. An election which is a contest for legitimate power is unique when it is managed within the accepted boundaries as delinated by the electoral law, Ogunkeyede stated, positing that the next Saturday elections have significant implications for security challenges. He called for integrated strategic security suits during the exercise, with a range of contingency plans and resources to ensure flexibility.

Participants at the meeting, all conceded to the mutually agreed code of conduct on the day before the election, the election day and days after election results. They had earlier facilitated quick exchanges on security engagements in electoral process and charged security agencies for the 2023 general elections to avoid being partisan or behaving the partisan way so as not to heighten tensions and undermine their functions.

Noting that an election period heightens trepidation, apprehension, the forum became a dedicated channel to diffuse tension or consternation as it identified potential flash points to watch for security threats across polling units in the constituency. The meeting tasked the security agencies to intensify surveillance to ensure no thugs, miscreants, urchins mar the peaceful conduct of the exercise or cause voter apathy.

The candidates' think-tanks identified the black spots and appealed to community leadership to advise their subjects against involvement in any acts capable of disrupting the polls. The think- tankers called for free and effective participation of the electorate in the elections.

The meeting was well attended.
