As we mark this monumental occasion of World Peace Day 2025, the Nigerian Peace Corps joins hands with millions globally in celebrating the universal values of peace, compassion, and unity. We reflect on the significance of this day, highlighting the unique peace issues faced by our beloved nation, Nigeria.
We commemorate the 26th anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly's adoption of the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace. In that declaration, the United Nations recognized that peace "not only is the absence of conflict, but also requires a positive, dynamic participatory process where dialogue is encouraged and conflicts are solved in a spirit of mutual understanding and cooperation."
This year's theme, "Act now for a peaceful world" underscores the importance of collective action amidst Nigeria's cultural and ethnic diversities. We must address peace-related challenges fairly. Nigeria has experienced devastating consequences of violence and instability, including communal conflicts, religious tensions, and insurgency. Nonetheless, we acknowledge the efforts of the present administration and the collective work of Nigerians and organizations in fostering peace.
The Nigerian Peace Corps has played a crucial role in promoting peace and harmony across the nation through initiatives like grassroots projects, peace-building workshops, youth development, and leadership training. However, the absence of a legal framework hinders our full potential. The Nigerian Peace Corps Bill, pending before the National Assembly, is vital for strengthening our commitment to peace.
We urge the Nigerian Senate to prioritize the passage of this bill, enabling the Nigerian Peace Corps to operate with greater autonomy and effectiveness. The bill would:
- Formalize and provide legal backing for the organization
- Enable retraining and deployment of peace officers alongside security agencies
- Foster collaborations with international organizations for global peace-building resources and expertise
On World Peace Day, we emphasize that unity is strength. We stand in solidarity with His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration. Passage of the Nigerian Peace Corps bill will demonstrate Nigeria's commitment to peace and a safer, prosperous future for all Nigerians.
We humbly beseech the Nigerian Senate to prioritize the passage of the Nigerian Peace Corps bill, hoping for subsequent presidential assent. This will empower the Nigerian Peace Corps toward peace-building and contribute significantly to Nigeria's stability and prosperity.
On this World Peace Day 2025, let us embark on a journey of unity, compassion, and dialogue, with the Nigerian Peace Corps leading toward a more peaceful Nigeria. Together, let's build a brighter future for generations yet unborn.
Happy World Peace Day 2025
