The Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji, publicly pledged his support for former Osun State governor Raufu Aregbesola during a visit to the royal palace on Tuesday. The monarch said he was “willing to follow the former governor’s political direction,” a statement that has sparked a wave of criticism and commentary across the city.
The endorsement comes as several Osogbo‑born politicians prepare to contest the upcoming gubernatorial election, including incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke, whose administration has rolled out a series of infrastructure and community‑development projects in the town.
Many residents expressed surprise at the Ataoja’s open political stance. “The monarch spoke only for himself, not for all of Osogboland,” said one local trader, who asked to remain anonymous. Others noted that the throne is traditionally expected to remain neutral. “Kings should refrain from making statements that portray them as biased or overly political,” remarked a youth leader.
Supporters of the Ataoja argue that the monarch is entitled to his personal political preference and that his endorsement could galvanize support for Aregbesola. Critics, however, warn that such declarations risk eroding the perceived impartiality of the institution and could polarize the electorate at a time when multiple candidates are vying for the state’s top office.
The palace has not issued a further statement clarifying the scope of the endorsement. The controversy highlights the growing intersection of traditional authority and partisan politics in Osun State as the 2026 gubernatorial race heats up.
