In a coordinated operation involving the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigerian military and the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), all 38 worshippers abducted during an attack on the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) in Eruku were released on Sunday, November 23, 2025.
Security response
President Bola Tinubu took personal charge of the crisis after armed men stormed the church on November 18, killing two worshippers (later reports indicated three) and taking 38 hostages. The DSS and the armed forces, including the Air Force, were activated. The NSA provided aerial surveillance and real‑time tracking of the kidnappers’ movements.
Contact and negotiation
DSS operatives opened a “controlled communication” channel with the bandits, using intelligence from the tracking to pressure them. Officials said the kidnappers were warned that continued defiance would trigger “pummelling” military action.
Rescue operation
At approximately 3:20 p.m. on Sunday, DSS and military units carried out a non‑kinetic operation in the forest near Oreke Okeigbo, Ifelodun Local Government Area. Sources said the bandits, aware that security forces could strike at any moment, released all 38 hostages unharmed.
After‑release
The freed worshippers were taken to the Kwara State Government House clinic for medical checks and later reunited with their families.
Why a “soft” approach was chosen
Government officials explained that the decision to avoid a direct assault was driven by two main factors. First, the kidnappers routinely use civilians as human shields, raising the risk of massive collateral damage. Second, the intelligence advantage gained from tracking and negotiation allowed the agencies to secure the release without firing a shot, preserving lives and maintaining an element of surprise for future operations.
Because revealing operational details could compromise sources, methods and future missions, security agencies typically keep the specifics classified, disclosing only the outcome – the safe return of the hostages – to the public.
The rescue underscores the government’s balancing act between protecting civilians and pursuing armed groups in a volatile region. Further action against the kidnappers is expected as authorities continue their investigations.
