Former Ekiti Governor Ayo Fayose has revealed that he came within seconds of striking former President Olusegun Obasanjo with a microphone during his 65th‑birthday celebration in Lagos last month.
In a recent interview, Fayose said he felt “provoked” by Obasanjo’s remarks, which he described as a series of subtle jabs delivered during a speech that lasted more than an hour. “I was so angry I almost grabbed the microphone and hit him with it,” Fayose told reporters. “But I restrained myself out of respect for the Vice‑President and the occasion.”
The episode traces back to a reconciliation effort Fayose said he initiated weeks earlier. Through a mutual friend, he reached out to Obasanjo to extend an olive branch, emphasizing that the gesture was not an apology because, in his view, he had never wronged the former president. Obasanjo accepted the invitation, agreed to attend the birthday event despite a busy schedule, and accepted $20,000 in travel support that Fayose arranged at his request.
According to Fayose, the trouble began when Obasanjo insisted on speaking last—a role traditionally reserved for the Vice‑President—and then asked Fayose and his wife to stand beside him for the duration of the address. The speech, Fayose said, was laced with veiled criticisms, turning what was meant to be a day of goodwill into a “surprise attack.”
“I had extended a hand of peace in good faith,” Fayose said. “Obasanjo’s conduct showed he had no interest in reconciliation. I questioned the point of seeking his validation— I neither need him nor am I contesting any election.”
The former governor added that, despite the tense moment, he chose not to escalate the situation, opting instead to maintain decorum for the sake of the guests and the Vice‑President, who was also in attendance.
The birthday celebration, attended by politicians, traditional leaders, and business figures, has sparked renewed discussion about lingering political riffs and the role of former heads of state in current party dynamics. No formal complaint has been lodged, and both Fayose and Obasanjo’s offices have declined further comment.
